Every single cinematographer and director who worked on the series filmed, composed, blocked, and lit every episode with the intention of the final output being 4:3. WebYou should watch The Wire, period. If you are able to easily watch the original SD on DVD, watch that. It is what the creators envisioned, and, more importantly, shots were specifically blocked and framed for 4:3. Therefore, it is the more "correct" version. If HD is the only thing readily available, watch that.
